City commences with Seaforth Beach upgrade – beachgoers to note temporary walkway closure

The City’s Coastal Management Department has commenced with the upgrade of the Seaforth beachfront in Simon’s Town this week. The work will continue until December 2023. Residents and beachgoers are advised of a temporary walkway closure and changes to beach access points, as well as alternative routes. 

The City has commenced with a ten-month upgrade programme at the Seaforth beachfront:

1. Upgrading the existing footways
2. Reconstructing the retaining walls
3. Upgrading the stairs and existing railings
4. Upgrading the hard and soft landscaping
   
    
   
   The project aims to improve pedestrian access to the beach; and upgrade the recreational spaces along this portion of the coastline.
   
    
   
   'We understand that this is a much loved beach spot in our city and therefore we want to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities we provide are of the best quality. Unfortunately, any upgrade always brings some inconvenience. For example, the parking will be reduced in the vicinity of Seaforth Beach while the project is ongoing. There will also be a temporary closure of the walkway between the IMT bus parking and the beach. We want to thank residents for their patience and support, we will do everything possible to ensure that we complete these upgrades by December 2023,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
   

Residents and visitors are advised of the following:

1. The walkway from Martello Road (IMT bus parking) to Seaforth beach (parking) will be closed for the duration of the project. All tour bus commuters visiting Boulders Beach are advised to walk back up to Main Road and down Whalers Way to access Boulders beach. Signage will direct visitors along the 1km detour route via Martello – Queen Victoria – Whalers Way.
   
    
2. Beach access form Seaforth parking will change as construction work moves around on site. Whenever the main access points are closed off, visitors may be directed along the blue access route to the beach.
   
    
3. Beach access from the IMT parking area will be via a side gate when construction activities allow. Access will be clearly directed through signage.
